Sandra Charles, Louisville, KY

fiber - batik

Sandra Charles was born in Hazard, Kentucky and now resides in Louisville where she has studied at the University of Louisville and Jefferson Community College. When she began working in batik, Sandra found a medium that expressed her inner spirit. She liked the batik process because of the way the dyes resisted the wax and the colors reacted with the fabric, making each piece unique and special. Sandra states, “As we go through life, we weave our experiences into a fabric that is unique to each of us. I try to relay this through my art with colors and symbolism.”

Sandra began selling and exhibiting her art in 1985 and was commissioned by the Presbyterian Church (USA) where she works, to create the 1999 National Peacemaking Poster and do the artwork for their 2005-2006 planning calendar.

Articles about Sandra’s work have appeared in numerous magazines including; Leo Magazine, Business First, Today’s Woman, and Louisville Magazine. She is a juried participant in the Kentucky Art Council’s Visual Arts at the Market.

Works by Sandra Charles can be found at S Bayly Boutique, Louisville, KY; and at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, Berea, KY.
