UPCOMING EVENTS

New Exhibition - "An Artful Array: Bowls by Kentucky Artisans"
Meet the Artisans Reception: Sunday, Sept. 18 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm

"Blue Dot Bowl Stack" by Laura Ross from the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea exhibit "An Artful Array."

The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea's newest exhibition An Artful Array: Bowls by Kentucky Artisans will be on display at the Center through Feb. 25, 2012. This exhibit showcases a wide range of bowls created by 41 Kentucky artisans. Included are works made from clay, wood, glass, fiber and stone. Bowls in this exhibit are both functional and non-functional with some works becoming pure sculpture.

Numerous works follow a functional path such as Laura Ross's "Blue Dot Bowl Stack," comprised of six bowls that stack with a lid as the finale. The resultant shape looks like a high rise building, but practical storage is also inherent in its design. Brook White has created a work that mimics nature with his glass bowl titled "Green Fluke." This bowl's striped glass, attached fins and stretched form result in its resembling the mouth of a whale.

In a less functional vein, Michael Frasca has taken eight stoneware bowls and joined them together into a diamond shaped wall sculpture that is breathtaking in its size and simplicity. Fiber artist Justine Dennis has stitched fabric into a shallow bowl titled "Mitosis," which features colorful stitched patterns suggesting its title. Chris Ramsey's bowl form "Have Another Cherry," with its undulating natural bark edge, was turned on a lathe from an extremely large wild cherry tree.

"Have Another Cherry," a turned bowl by Chris Ramsey featured in the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea exhibit "An Artful Array."Participating artists include Richard Adams, London; Lydia P. Allen, Peewee Valley; Steven C. Balson, Villa Hills; Wayne Bates, Murray; Linda Bowman, Louisville; Marianne Brown, Lawrenceburg; Karen Brown-Levy, Louisville; Lonnie Combs, Fisherville; Jerry Cooper, Berea; Ron Cooper, Mt. Vernon; Justine Dennis, New Haven; Dolita Dohrman, Louisville; Jamie Donaldson, Georgetown; Jack Fifield, McKee; Michael Frasca, Harrodsburg; Devin French, Louisville; Matthew Gaddie, Bardstown; Jack Gann, Berea; Tina Gebhart, Berea; Susan Goldstein, Lexington; Jim Gottuso, Louisville; Walter Hyleck, Berea; John Keeton, Winchester; Greg Kirkland, Elkhorn; Ann Klem, Louisville; Ron McWhorter, Richmond; Sebastian Moh, Louisville; Joe Molinaro, Winchester; Martha Puckett, Louisville; Patrick Rademaker, Louisville; Chris Ramsey, Somerset; Laura Ross, Louisville; Melvin Rowe, Louisville; Pamela Rucker, Lancaster; Henrietta and Jeff Scott, Columbia; Amelia Stamps, Lexington; David Waltz, Columbia; Michael Ware, Hindman; June and Rayford Watts, Williamsburg; Brook F. White Jr., Louisville; and Thomas R. Williams of Paris.

A Meet the Artisans reception will be held on Sunday, Sept. 18, from 1-3 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. This event is free and open to the public.

"LaVon Williams: Kentucky Folk Artist" Lobby Exhibit Continues through Sept. 10
Works in this Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea lobby exhibit are from the Kentucky Folk Art Center at Morehead State University Collection and include carvings depicting musicians, such as "Mr. Johnson," a 41-inch tall rendering of a stand up Bass player; several smaller works that portray guitarists and a carved saxophone player titled "Yardbird." Of special interest is the carving titled, "When I Was Young, I Could Fly," which reflects the artist's career as a professional basketball player. Additional works by Williams are available for purchase at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, including low relief painted panels depicting musicians.

New Lobby Exhibit Opening Sept. 17: "The Clays of Kentucky"
A Kentucky Historical Society Exhibit

The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea is pleased to showcase in the Center's lobby, a Kentucky Historical Society exhibit titled, "The Clays of Kentucky," from Sept. 17 - Nov. 13, 2011.

In the entire scope of Kentucky history, only a few families have played an influential role in public life over many decades. The Clay family is one of those. From the settling of Kentucky in the late 18th century to the close of the 20th century, members of the Clay family have made important contributions in business, politics, agriculture, and women's rights. The Clays have greatly affected life in Kentucky and the course of the Commonwealth's history.

This exhibit contains images and documents rarely seen in public. Accompanying this exhibit will be information on Henry Clay and his historic estate Ashland located in Lexington, as well as information on Cassius Clay and his historical estate Whitehall, located outside of Richmond, Kentucky. The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea will also be featuring a number of books focusing on members of the Clay family.
